Privacy Notice
Last updated: 9 July 2026 · HowGreat (howgreat.sg)
HowGreat (“we”, “us”) provides online Chinese tuition for primary school students. We take the privacy of children and their families seriously. This notice explains what personal data we collect, why, how we protect it, and your rights under Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA).
HowGreat is a sole proprietorship registered in Singapore. Because our students are young children, a parent or guardian must give consent on the child's behalf before an account is created. We ask for this consent at sign-up.
Who to contact
Our Data Protection Officer can be reached at howgreat.sg@gmail.com (or WhatsApp +65 8727 7538) for any question, request, or concern about your or your child's personal data.
What we collect
From the parent/guardian:
- Your name and email address (to set up the account, send login details, and contact you about your child's learning)
From or about the student:
- A username (we do not require a real email address for the child)
- Learning work your child submits as part of lessons: photos of written work, audio recordings, and typed reflections or blog entries
- Progress data: lessons completed, points earned, and similar activity within the platform
We collect only what we need to run the lessons. We do not ask children for personal details beyond the above.
Why we collect it
We use this data solely to:
- Create and manage your child's account
- Deliver lessons and let your child submit and review their work
- Allow the teacher (蓝老师) to give feedback and track progress
- Contact you about your child's account, trial, or learning
We do not sell personal data, share it with advertisers, or use it for any purpose unrelated to teaching your child.
Who can see your child's work
Your child's photos, recordings, and written work are private by default. They are stored in secured, access-controlled storage and are visible only to your child (their own work) and the teacher. They are not searchable and not shared with other students or families.
With your consent, HowGreat may also showcase some student work or lesson recordings publicly — for example on the HowGreat website or on social media (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp). This is always anonymised:
- For written work, photos, and audio recordings: your child's name is never shown.
- For live lesson recordings: your child's name is never shown, and their face is either blurred or off-screen.
You choose whether to allow this. When your child's account is first activated, you will be asked to tick (or leave unticked) two separate consent options — one for showcasing work submissions, one for showcasing lesson recordings. You can decline both and still use HowGreat normally. You can also change your mind at any time by contacting the teacher.
How we protect it
- Photos and audio are kept in private storage, accessible only through temporary, signed links — not on the open internet. Content shown publicly under a showcase consent is a separate flow — before any piece of student work or lesson recording is displayed on our website or social media, the system checks that the parent has actively granted the relevant showcase consent for that student.
- Data is transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections.
- Each student account is limited to a small number of devices.
- Access is restricted to the teacher and the people who operate HowGreat.
Service providers and where data is processed
We use trusted third-party providers to host and run the platform. Your and your child's personal data — including photos, audio, and written work — is stored and processed on infrastructure located in Singapore. Where any data is processed outside Singapore, we take steps to ensure it receives a standard of protection comparable to that required under the PDPA.
We use AI tools to help the teacher prepare lesson materials. Children's personal data — names, contact details, photos, and recordings — is never sent to these AI tools.
How long we keep it
We keep your child's account and work for as long as the account is active. If you close the account or withdraw consent, we delete your child's personal data — including photos, audio, and written work — within 90 days, except where we are required to keep certain records by law.
Your rights
As the parent/guardian, you may at any time:
- Access the personal data we hold about you or your child
- Correct any inaccurate data
- Withdraw consent and ask us to delete your child's account and data
To exercise any of these, email howgreat.sg@gmail.com. We will respond as soon as reasonably possible.
Data breaches
If a data breach occurs that is likely to cause significant harm, we will notify the affected families and the PDPC as required by law, so that steps can be taken to limit any harm.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice from time to time. The “last updated” date above shows the current version. For significant changes affecting how we handle your child's data, we will let you know.
