FAQ
Pinyin questions, answered
What is Hanyu Pinyin?
Hanyu Pinyin is the standard system for writing Mandarin Chinese sounds with the Latin alphabet. It helps learners connect a Chinese character with its pronunciation.
How are neutral tones shown?
Following the style commonly used in Singapore primary schools, neutral-tone syllables are shown without a tone mark, such as le, men and zi.
Why do some characters have more than one reading?
Some Chinese characters are polyphonic, which means their pronunciation changes with the word or sentence. In the pinyin-above-hanzi view, tap a coral-underlined character to choose another reading.
Is this pinyin converter free?
Yes. The converter is free to use, works in your browser and does not require an account.
